“A lot of people tell me, ‘I can tell these flowers were done by a Black girl,’” says LaParis Phillips, owner of Brooklyn Blooms. “There’s some spice to it.”

Phillips — who moved to New York from her native Missouri after college graduation, initially seeking a job in fashion — creates stunning, sophisticated arrangements that force you to take notice. “Flowers allow me to express myself through color, through shapes, through texture,” she continues. “It lets me show my style in a different way.”

To enter Brooklyn Blooms is to be transported to an artist’s studio, colorful and bursting with her chosen medium. “So many people think ‘roses, hydrangeas,’ and that’s it,” says Phillips, who picked up floral design 12 years ago as a college student working part-time at a flower shop. Now 29, she opened her own Bed-Stuy boutique last May. “One of my goals is to educate people and expand their flower palate.”
